Here is a more animated process of what I’m attempting. First I show the actual character I’m trying to learn. I then draw a rough guide over her, then I do a black rough trace. So every day or so I <em>try</em> to draw something as close to the trace as possible without actually tracing. I have the character shot <em>beside</em> me and, only using the green skeleton guide, try and match the proportions again.</p> <p>Once complete, I compare to the black trace, and usually moan at how crappy it came out. xD So far the last one is the closest, particularly the eyes almost match perfectly but I can’t quite tell why the eye on the right side seems to be off. This time, no tracing (besides the large green guide in the background)! :D 8-head body seems to be the main proportion, 7 sometimes for the shorter character (and obviously something like 3-4 for chibis). The realistic proportion is not something I’m accustomed to, so I’m noticing a need to check the bone/muscle structure more than usual. Traced some rough guides off of it, then I tried copying the image from a window on my left side in the red-orange lines, then put the image back and retraced in black.</p> <p>On the bright side, I followed the guides ok. Unfortunately, for some reason I even traced the guides kinda wrong (eye level, wth?), which threw me off. Don’t understand why I couldn’t tell the eyes were too big and lopsided. Nose/mouth were ok but I followed the guide wrong and shifted to the left. I burned through <a href="http://mangafox.me/manga/girls_of_the_wild_s/" target="_blank">Girls of the WIld’s</a>, a Korean webmanga and totally got hooked on the artist’s style. The chibier stuff is something I think I canalmost match (it’s similar to what would be my normal style), but the normal style/proportions in the manga really caught my eye and so here I am attempting to improve my skills.</p> <p>I am mainly trying to draw side-by-side, looking a the manga and drawing it in SAI, however as you will <strong>totally</strong> notice, there were a few parts (the ones with black line) that I <em>traced</em>. I try starting with the some of the head guides etc. but ended up tracing after my eyeballed version comes out like crap (case in point, the glasses girl is completely wrong on my eyeball’d version).
