5/29 @0am Aww Yeaaa, with Chapter 41 just out I went through a nice little “speed sketching” session. I tried to be less detailed and focus more on the quickness of the sketches, with a good couple of the characters drawn right away sans any guide lines. :D The guy with tissues out his nose looked so close to how I usually draw myself, so I went ahead and made his hair just a little longer to match my mane. xD

5/24 @9am *sigh* This is way tougher than I thought it would be. Here is a more animated process of what I’m attempting. First I show the actual character I’m trying to learn. I then draw a rough guide over her, then I do a black rough trace. So every day or so I try to draw something as close to the trace as possible without actually tracing. I have the character shot beside me and, only using the green skeleton guide, try and match the proportions again.
Once complete, I compare to the black trace, and usually moan at how crappy it came out. xD So far the last one is the closest, particularly the eyes almost match perfectly but I can’t quite tell why the eye on the right side seems to be off. The top of the hair/skull seems to be my biggest difficulty, and usually the nose/mouth are off the side.

5/23 @15pm Oh look, I actually drew a dude this time (although it’s technically me, so I guess it doesn’t count, since I draw me all the time xD)! Just something that came about a Twitter conversation. ;P

5/20 @11am Slowly but surely I think I’m getting the hang of this style. This time, no tracing (besides the large green guide in the background)! :D 8-head body seems to be the main proportion, 7 sometimes for the shorter character (and obviously something like 3-4 for chibis). The realistic proportion is not something I’m accustomed to, so I’m noticing a need to check the bone/muscle structure more than usual. For example, a shoulder in my usual style is normally just a curve down (think an upside down j) or sometimes non-existant (e.g. when I do we♥ux comics) but realistically I have to draw the shoulder itself, then the arm “coming out” of it, then the elbow, as you can seen below:

Dude practice

5/19 @11am I put the face in SAI. Traced some rough guides off of it, then I tried copying the image from a window on my left side in the red-orange lines, then put the image back and retraced in black.
On the bright side, I followed the guides ok. Unfortunately, for some reason I even traced the guides kinda wrong (eye level, wth?), which threw me off. Don’t understand why I couldn’t tell the eyes were too big and lopsided. Nose/mouth were ok but I followed the guide wrong and shifted to the left. I’m gonna try redrawing this every day (or so) until I can match the trace as close as possible (without literally tracing, and perhaps one day, even without the guide :O).

5/18 @21pm More and more practice! I burned through Girls of the WIld’s, a Korean webmanga and totally got hooked on the artist’s style. The chibier stuff is something I think I canalmost match (it’s similar to what would be my normal style), but the normal style/proportions in the manga really caught my eye and so here I am attempting to improve my skills.
I am mainly trying to draw side-by-side, looking a the manga and drawing it in SAI, however as you will totally notice, there were a few parts (the ones with black line) that I traced. I try starting with the some of the head guides etc. but ended up tracing after my eyeballed version comes out like crap (case in point, the glasses girl is completely wrong on my eyeball’d version). T_T Hopefully this helps me pick up the proportions right, so I don’t need to trace, and eventually, be able to draw in a similar style on my own!
